Violet Wands

First, let me state that violet wands are ADVANCED BDSM play.  They are considered edge play by  the majority of people in the lifestyle.  So, that being said……

You can buy newly manufactured wands or antique ones.  There is much more than just a difference between new and classic.  The most important part of the wand is the core.  When purchasing a wand you want a core that will hold up to long periods of usage without overheating.  Manufacturers of new wands use ceramic, mylar or a “new wax” type core.  The new wands with ceramic cores  are dependable and they don't over heat even when used for long periods.   I did read where the FDA approved  several of the “new wax” type for use.  These do not seem to be popular with the BDSM crowd.

Vintage wands have cores of wax of an older type and can usually only run 5 minutes at a time.  Their wiring is also often suspect.  There are some companies that take the vintage wands and refurbish them.  This still doesn't mean they will run more than the 5 minutes.  Vintage probes are made of very thin, fragile glass that breaks easily.  Even if the probe is unbroken the vacuum may be lost and the probe will not work.

Violet wands are EXPENSIVE!  You need the wand and several attachments as well as a padded metal case to carry it all in because the glass probes are fragile.  A fairly basic starter kit with a few accessories will be about $400-$500.

So, what should you insist on?  You should insist on a violet wand with a ceramic core that has a 3 pronged plug and a variable setting.  Preferably, get one where the setting either locks or is hard to turn.  Look for glass probes that are made from Pyrex or non-UV glass.  Metal probes or accessories that plug into the wand MUST be spark gap isolated.  You also need to check each electrical outlet before you use it with a “continuity tester” to make sure that the ground wire works.  And lastly a “safety circuit interrupter” which plugs into the wall and you plug the wand into it.  It works in case of a power surge or such, which, considering this past week, makes it seem pretty darn important.

The two most recommended manufacturers of violet wands are Erotec and Rupert Huse & Son.  Both of these companies have lots of information on their sites concerning safety, but don't stop there!  Read more!

Violet wands can be purchased on Ebay.  They are sometimes  listed as ‘violet ray’ devices.  Reputable distributors of new wands do occasionally have wands listed there.
